Opticians, Optometrists, & Ophthalmologists:
What's the difference?
There is frequently a lot of confusion about the
different specialties related to vision. To help clear this up,
here are some explanations. First, optiicians are the eyewear professionals
who make lenses. They are usually the professionals who help you
when you are in an eyewear store. Opticians sell lenses, designer
frames, and eye-care accessories.
Next, optometrists are practitioners
who are professionally trained as specialists in vision. Optometrists
are licensed to perform eye exams for visual defects and can prescribe
corrective lenses (contact lenses or frame lenses).
Finally, ophthalmologists are medical doctors
(MDs) who specialize in eyes and vision. Their training is far more
extensive than the other eye-care specialists discussed above.
Chicago Laser Eye Surgery - Lasik Surgery
For over a decade, laser eye surgery has been
growing to become a big part of the eye-care profession. The early
days of corrective eye surgery were a mixed bag of successes and
failures. Research has since shown that Although many people say
that their eye surgery was a great event, there are possible side-effects
to laser eye surgery.
A more modern version of laser eye surgery is
LASIK surgery. LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is
a surgical procedure intended to reduce a person's dependency on
glasses or contact lenses.
LASIK eye surgery professionals can provide a
full list of risks. Some patients lose their vision, develop debilitating
visual symptoms such as glare, halos, or double vision that can
seriously affect nighttime vision. Some patients may develop severe
dry eye syndrome (your eye may not be able to produce enough tears
to keep the eye moist and comfortable). You should discuss your
expectations with your doctor and realize that you may still require
glasses or contacts after the surgery. iSince the technology was
initially used in 1998, information on long-term outcomes is not
yet available.
Some laser eye professionals advertise "affordable
laser eye surgery" or "cheap LASIK surgery."
Just ask yourself one question when considering going to these laser
eye surgery clinics: Would you trust your eyes to a someone who
offers a discount on their medical-related services?
