Chicago Trial Lawyers
For many people, the term 'lawyer' brings to mind
ideas of a courtroom. In general, there are two sides in a courtroom
proceeding involving trial lawyers. On one side, the plaintiff (or
complainant) is seeking a remedy for an injury or for a violation
of rights. The plaintiff can be the government, a corporation, a
group of people or a single individual.
The other side of a courtroom proceeding is the
defendant (also called the respondent), who is accused of causing
an injury or of violating the plaintiff’s rights.
A plaintiff’s lawyer (also called an attorney)
is the one who explains to the judge what happened between the plaintiff
and the defendant. The plaintiff's attorney wants the judge to find
that what happened was illegal and that something should be done
to fix it.
Conversely, a defendant’s attorney also
explains to the judge what happened from the client's perspective
and wants the judge to find that what happened was legal. The defendant
can be the government, a corporation, a group of people or a single
individual.
